Dundurn Press is one of Canada’s leading independent book publishers. We aim to publish contemporary trade fiction and non-fiction, focusing on works that amplify and elevate exceptional Canadian writers and important stories that reflect the world, satisfy curiosity, enlighten, and entertain. Dundurn Press publishes across numerous genres, from literary and genre fiction, to biography, history, lifestyle, and public policy, to middle-grade and teen fiction.

We are currently seeking a versatile and experienced part-time Production Designer. This contract position supports our small production and design team as they work with editorial and marketing to produce upwards of fifty books a year, along with marketing materials, and take care of an extensive backlist.  Reporting to the Production Manager, you will also assist and take direction from the Art Director.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Initial layout and typesetting of book text
  • Fine-tuning and problem-solving interior design elements
  • Making careful, sometimes extensive, editorial and design corrections to page proofs
  • Assisting with our internal image review and editing workflow
  • Building Marketing & Publicity ads and collaterals (both print and digital)

  • 2–3 years combined education and/or experience in any of these areas: graphic design, print production, prepress, book/newspaper/magazine publishing
  • Expertise using Adobe InDesign & Photoshop, font management software, macOS
  • Proficiency with Google Apps, Office 365, and file collaboration software (Basecamp, Dropbox)
  • Excellent time management skills, meticulous eye for detail, and superior organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and switch gears quickly, reprioritize workload as needed, and proactively communicate with your remote colleagues
  • Post-secondary education

Compensation: hourly rate of $20–$27, commensurate with experience. We’re offering a six-month contract with a commitment of 2.5 days per week.

This position would be a great fit for a seasoned print pro looking to supplement their graphic design practice with steady part-time work. Alternatively, this could also be an excellent opportunity for a junior graphic designer to hone their foundational knowledge and learn the intricacies of book publishing from a supportive and experienced team.

Attributes and assets:

  • Responsible, respectful, friendly, and creative, you can work independently or collaboratively
  • Superior command of the written English language, you are a strong reader and aspiring grammarian
  • Typesetting fanatic! Not only can you input ellipses, en and em dashes, and discretional breaks, you understand where and why they are used
  • You are no slouch when it comes to technical/production skills: the Scripts panel is part of your workspace; you build out InDesign styles based on root parent styles; you know your PostScript OTF fonts and avoid System fonts; you use accurate blacks, never attempt registration black, and don’t get you started on RGB vs the CMYK gamut!
