Toronto-based author Doug Taylor has been nominated for a Heritage Toronto Book Award, which honours an extraordinary contribution to the conservation and promotion of Toronto’s heritage.

Toronto’s Local Movie Theatres of Yesteryear: Brought Back to Thrill You Again brings back memories of Toronto’s old movie theatres. Most of the theatres have been demolished, but to visually recreate them, the book includes 128 historic pictures of the theatres — exteriors, marquees, colourful neon signs, and auditoriums — many of the photos never before published in books or on the internet.

Doug Taylor is a Toronto historian who was a member of the faculty of Lakeshore Teachers’ College (York University). Through books including Toronto Theatres and the Golden Age of the Silver Screen and his history blog tayloronhistory.com, he continues to explore the city’s past and document its architectural heritage.

The 43rd Annual Heritage Toronto Awards will take place at The Carlu on Monday, October 23.
